Do You Need To Rent A Crane? Questions You Should Ask When Selecting A Company

Posted on

There are many reasons why you may be looking to rent a crane. Your business may be looking to place a sign or billboard atop your store, you may need an air conditioner on your home's roof replaced, or you may be completing a construction project and need to lift building materials several floors. Regardless of why you need to rent a crane, there are many companies that rent them to both businesses and individuals. If you have never had to rent one before, you may be unsure as to what factors you need to consider when selecting a company to rent from. Here are a few of the questions you should ask when selecting a company to get crane rentals from:

Are Crane Operators Included With the Rental?

Some companies solely rent out their cranes. They expect you to find or hire a licensed crane operator to use the crane. Other companies rent out both the crane and the crane operator, ensuring that a licensed operator is operating their machinery. There are both pros and cons to renting a machine with an operator and not renting one with an operator. As a general rule of thumb, if you don't have anyone licensed to use one available, looking for a company that rents out their operators with the machine may be a good idea.

Do You Handle the Permitting?

In many cities and counties, you are required to obtain a permit to use a crane. This is especially true if the crane is being used in a residential neighborhood or partially blocks traffic. In some cases, the rental company will help you determine if permits are needed and then help you pull those permits before renting to you. In other cases, it is on you to do it yourself. Asking this question helps you determine what is expected of you when it comes to the permits.

How Do You Charge?

Lastly, ask a crane rental company how they charge. Some rental companies will charge you by the job. You tell them what you need the crane for and they charge to complete that job. Other companies will charge you by the hour, by the day or even by the week. Always learn how you are charged and then find the method that makes the most sense based on what your rental needs are.

As you look for a company to rent a crane from, there are many questions you should ask. You likely already know to ask about the type of cranes they rent and the price of the rentals. But there are other questions you should ask in addition to these questions. Knowing what questions to ask can help you find the right rental company for your needs.
